Film Focus: Hubie Halloween (2020)

Halloween isn’t cancelled yet. It might just look different this year, but isn’t that the whole point of dressing up anyway?!

Hubie Dubois is Salem’s finest local loser, also known as the kindest hero in town (that is, if you ask his mother and Violet Valentine). He’s known for his fondness of Halloween — well, not so much the pranks and the scary stuff, but the safe preparations. So to spike things up on this year’s spookiest celebration, there’s a new neighbour in town and we hear noises coming from the house…

You need to be able to joke with the comedy genre to appreciate most of Adam Sandler’s movies and that’s exactly what Hubie Halloween requires, too. If you perceive the movie as a skilful mockery of the genre that features plenty of references and acts as an homage to horror movies in the 2000s and earlier, you’ll find that 1 hour and 42 minutes pass relatively quickly.

Kindness is the best accessory you can choose to wear in 2020. Just kidding, it’s totally Hubie’s Swiss Army thermos.

If you fancy facing your inner ghosts, why don’t you give The Haunting of Bly Manor a go this Halloween? 👻
